The TSMC smelter is already well established in the 7 nm chip market (Apple A12, Huawei Kirin 980, Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 …), but is already preparing for the future. Plants dedicated to 5 nm and 3 nm processors are already planned.
The SoC of a smartphone is one of the centerpieces of the device. It is a true nerve center for the device it composes, and manages not only all the logical operations, but also the graphic display, the network connections or the calculations required to process the images taken by the camera. That's why founders are so important today and two stand out: TSMC and Samsung.
Each one tries to propose more and more powerful CPUs, or more precisely more and more efficient, which passes by more and more engraving engravings. For the 7 nm, TSMC managed to unsheathe the first and thus recovered customers of brands like Apple (for the A12 of the iPhone XS), Qualcomm (for the Snapdragon 855) or Huawei (for the Kirin 980 of the Mate 20 Pro).
Do not rest on your laurels
TSMC does not stop there and intends to continue its momentum. Also, the founder already plans two new factories to prepare for the future. Taiwan News reports that TSMC is building a 5-nm chip factory at Southern Taiwan Science Park in Tainan, Taiwan, with production expected in late 2019 or early 2020.
At the same time, TSMC has just been granted permission to build a second plant at the same location for chips engraved in 3 nm. The project will start in 2022 for a production launch in late 2022 or early 2023. This plant is unique in that it will use 20% renewable energy and 50% recycled water.
This promises significant evolutions at this level for another half a decade at least!
