Apple Pay, Pay, Paylib, Samsung Pay: How to pay with your phone

Replacing a bank card with a smartphone to pay at a supermarket checkout is a reality. Apple Pay, Google Pay or Samsung Pay, many services to offer to pay with his mobile contactless. Which banks are compatible? What are the differences between services? Here is our complete file on NFC payment.

To pay in store, there are several methods today. From the traditional species to the inevitable bank card through the aging check, everyone finds his account (bank). The latest in settlement is the mobile method. Via a special application, it is indeed possible to pay by putting the phone on the card terminal, like the payment without contact.
Mobile payment, how does it work?
Payment via a smartphone is done by placing the device on a credit card terminal. With NFC technology for short-distance data transmission, as well as a dedicated application on the device, the phone will function as the contactless of a blue card.
Once configured, whether with an iPhone or an Android smartphone, it is usually sufficient to approach the phone of the payment terminal, having chosen the bank card to use, and possibly identify by biometrics (Face ID, reader impression, etc.). This solution works even when the smartphone is not connected to any mobile network or Wi-Fi.
Which stores are compatible?
All brands that offer terminals compatible with contactless payment by credit card are also compatible with this payment solution using a smartphone. The best way to ensure the compatibility of the terminal, other than by asking the merchant, is to read what is written on it at the time of settlement. If the device asks to "present a card" and not "insert" it is because it takes into account the contactless payment.

Free and without ceiling
Unlike contactless payment with a credit card, which is limited to 30 euros per payment for cards issued since 2018, the contactless payment with a smartphone has no ceiling. It is therefore possible to pay 50, 100, 200 euros or more with your smartphone.
In principle, payment using a contactless service does not involve any additional costs. It is always better to check the rates charged by your bank.
Is it possible to pay with a smartphone turned off or unloaded?
Although it is possible to pay with a credit card in contactless, when it is a product without a battery, it is not possible to pay the same way with a smartphone off. It is necessary that the smartphone is turned on to activate the payment, select the card to use and identify with the fingerprint reader or facial recognition.
Google Pay
Google Pay is the universal solution offered by Google on Android. It is available in France since December 2018. To operate Google requires a smartphone with Android 5.0 Lollipop or newer, and compatible NFC of course. It is undoubtedly one of the actors in France to propose the least compatible banks, but it is also the best integrated solution on Android.

security
Google Pay stores bank details securely and securely in special data centers. The smartphone stores a virtual identifier created from these coordinates, corresponding to the registered bank card. It is this identifier that is transmitted to the payment terminal, without the merchant being able to read the original banking information.
Biometric identification is only required for transactions of more than 30 euros.

Samsung Pay
Samsung also offers its own contactless payment solution on Android, competing with Google Pay. This service is compatible with some Galaxy smartphones of the brand (including Galaxy S10, Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9, but also some Galaxy A).
It has the distinction of using two different technologies, the NFC on the one hand as its competitors, and the MST on the other hand. The latter can imitate the magnetic stripe of the bank card, and is therefore compatible with all payment terminals, especially in the United States where this method of payment is widespread. Note that in France, Samsung has chosen not to use MST technology.

security
The Samsung Pay app stores an ID corresponding to the registered credit card. It is this identifier that is transmitted to the payment terminal. Thus the data of the card itself is never transmitted or even stored in the application and even less on the servers of Samsung.
To pay, it is necessary to use a biometric identification by the iris scanner or the fingerprint reader. Too little secure, facial recognition is not compatible with Samsung Pay.

And security in all this?
An essential problem is often mentioned when talking about mobile payment: that of security.
Can I pay with my phone without my noticing?
Some mobile payment services, such as Paylib, offer to pay without a security barrier up to a certain configurable amount of 0 to 20 euros. The operation is therefore similar to that of the contactless payment of a conventional card. Beyond this, the application must be open and ask you for any passwords, facial recognition or fingerprint recognition that you have set up.
What if my phone is stolen?
Mobile payment works like a dematerialization of a bank card, simulating it on the phone. If you ever steal your phone, the safest is still to oppose the card to make sure to permanently block any transaction. However, in the case of Apple Pay and Google Pay, it must be kept in mind that bank data is stored in encrypted form and necessarily requires a biometric identification of the phone.
Apple and Google also offer ways to clear the memory of his phone remotely with "Locate my iPhone" and "Locate my device."
