Best of MWC 2019: the 7 most exciting new products

In the wake of the closure of the MWC 2019, FrAndroid editorial reviews the main announcements of the show. Between new smartphones from Xiaomi, Huawei or Nokia, new trends or some more original products, it's time to take stock before making an appointment for next year.

While the Mobile World Congress closed on Thursday in Barcelona, it is time to return to the biggest announcements of the show. If Huawei hit hard with the presentation of the Mate X, its first foldable screen smartphone, other manufacturers have managed to pull out of the game like HMD with its Nokia 9 PureView or Xiaomi with its Mi 9. Like every year, the The show also highlighted some trends for the coming year, such as 5G. Well almost…
Huawei Mate X
It was one of the first announcements of the MWC 2019, probably the most awaited and certainly the most memorable. A few days after Samsung, Huawei announced in turn its foldable screen smartphone, the Huawei Mate X.

If the philosophy – including tariff with a price of 2300 euros – is identical to that of the Korean firm, the collapsible device of Huawei however adopts a format different from that of Samsung. The screen folds to the outside, enough to bring two advantages over its main competitor. The screen is much larger even when the device is closed, where Samsung offers a small external screen with wide borders, and the smartphone is also much thinner, with 11 mm thick against 17 at his Korean counterpart .

Of course, the announcement has been much talked about during the Barcelona show, but we must keep in mind that this is only a product showcase. Marketed at a particularly high price, the smartphone is not intended to be sold, and certainly not to the general public. We will wait patiently so that smartphones with folding screens become more affordable, and find a real use, before recommending them. Above all, we will wait to test it thoroughly before giving a more complete opinion about the Huawei Mate X.

Samsung Galaxy S10
This year, Samsung did not present its Galaxy S10 during the MWC, but upstream, during a dedicated event in San Francisco. Nevertheless, the new high-end manufacturer was, as every year, on all lips and in all hands.

On the stand of Samsung, one of the largest in the show, with the exception of a few tables reserved for demonstrations of Galaxy Watch Active or the new Galaxy A range, the space was completely occupied by the new devices in the range . The Samsung Galaxy S10, S10 Plus and S10e were particularly put forward by the Korean manufacturer. Samsung has taken care to present its smartphone ahead of the show, to avoid frontal competition with Huawei and he did well. Of course, the Huawei Mate X was able to make visitors dream that gathered around the Huawei showcase, but it is a few meters away, on the stand of Samsung, that everyone saw themselves already a Galaxy S10 in the hand.

Whether it's the design with a pierced OLED screen, the triple photo module on the back or the display quality, the Galaxy S10 seemed to tick all the boxes and its price, much more affordable than the Mate X, made it one of the winners of the show. Remains the Galaxy Fold, which we could see a contrario as one of the losers because of its design much less flashy than the Mate X. Because after all, these products were primarily Smartphones showcase.

Nokia 9 PureView
The smartphone has been waiting for many months, probably too many, so that its configuration may seem to be behind. But after all, it's not so much for its features that the Nokia 9 PureView has marked us during the Mobile World Congress, but for its photo capabilities.

On paper, we had already been able to pick up the HMD smartphone before the show and had appreciated its compact size and design. But it is on the picture that we waited for it at the turn. We were able to capture some shots at the MWC – without having the opportunity to publish them – and to say that we are looking forward to testing the smartphone over a longer period.

For the HDR mode, for capturing details or for the many data recorded in RAW format, the Nokia 9 PureView has excited us.

Sony Xperia 1
Since 2015, Sony has taken the habit of offering smartphone screens going ever further. The Japanese manufacturer was one of the first to integrate a 4K slab for a smartphone with the Z5 in 2015, and was one of the precursors of HDR with the XZ Premium in 2017. For its new Xperia 1, Sony has added two novelties to complete the display of the smartphone.

First, Sony has kept the 4K definition of the screen while adding an OLED panel, already present on the Xperia XZ3, which was only Full HD. What allow to further accentuate the contrast and therefore to be able to better enjoy the HDR10 compatibility.

Then, the 21: 9 format of the screen not only allows a simpler grip, since the smartphone is longer and therefore less wide, but also better to enjoy movies in cinemascope format, without the black bands at the top and at the bottom of the screen. Sony also boasts a partnership with Netflix to optimize the screen calibration for movies on the app. Still, here too, the ads are interesting and we can not wait to test the Sony Xperia 1 to evaluate its screen in real conditions.

The 5G … well almost
The 5G was obviously ubiquitous at the show, not only in the speeches of builders, operators or telecom infrastructure companies, but also in ads.

"Two years ago, I announced that 5G would arrive soon. A year ago, I announced that 5G would arrive soon. This year I do not tell you it's coming, but it's here, "exclaimed Rajeev Suri, CEO of Nokia. For their part, smartphone manufacturers have multiplied the announcements of 5G products, whether Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G, ZTE Axon 10 Pro 5G, Huawei Mate X, LG V50 ThinQ or even the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G, unveiled a few days before. But all that is above all on paper, at least in France.
Although 5G networks began to be deployed late last year in the United States or in Korea, this is not yet the case in much of Europe. A situation that comes especially from government authorities to believe Rajeev Suri: "Last year, Europe was already behind Asia or the United States. This year this delay has increased. Same story on the side of Stéphane Richard, CEO of Orange, according to which "France is one year behind the 5G."

This delay is due in particular to the fact that the State has still not indicated to the operators and the infrastructure manufacturers what will be the available frequency bands. The bidding will be launched only in the fall of 2019 before a full rollout scheduled early next year. For the moment, in France at least, the 5G remains a sweet utopia. As much to say that it is therefore useless to buy a smartphone 5G this year.
