Google Fi: the operator could arrive in Europe, what consequences for the French market?

Project Fi, now named Google Fi, is Google's virtual operator. Since its experimental launch in April 2015 and its global deployment in the United States, it has gained points against conventional operators. At the end of 2018, here is a new index that could announce its launch in Europe, and perhaps in France.

After launching the free roaming adventure in 170 countries, Google seems to have a plan for Google Fi in Europe. On December 10, the US company registered the "Google Fi" trademark with EUIPO (the European Union Intellectual Property Office responsible for managing trademarks in the EU).
We do not know how Google will compete with traditional mobile operators, because its virtual offering is currently only available in the United States for owners of five models of Android smartphones
What is the offer of Google Fi?
The offer of Project Fi is very simple: it starts at 20 dollars (17.50 euros) in exchange for unlimited calls and messages and every gig consumed is charged 10 dollars. According to Google, the data benefits from the maximum speed of the network in the United States. And this price per gigi … is the same in 170 countries listed on this link.

The lowest price is $ 20 for unlimited calls and messages, while the cheapest is up to $ 80 for unlimited voice, SMS and data. Note that the offer is non-binding, you can stop it whenever you want. If you choose the price per gig, you will only pay what you actually consume.

In the United States, it is a relatively competitive offer compared to local operators. It is much less so on the French market where mobile operators have drastically lowered their prices since the arrival of Free.

Finally, what would make a differentiating element of Google Fi is the important list of countries taken into account, perfect for those who travel a lot, as well as the associated application.

The principle is to allow the user to always enjoy the best possible connection, whether it comes from WiFi or 4G. Google has developed a new technology to "intelligently" connect the user's device to the fastest network. As such, when the phone is connected to the network via WiFi, calls and messages sent will also go through WiFi. When the phone is connected to a public WiFi (in a café for example), the notification bar displays a small key indicating that the data is secure.
Different strategy for Apple
When announcing the new iPhone XS and XS Max, Apple said they had an eSIM in addition to the traditional location for a physical nano-SIM card. With eSIM, no need to insert a SIM card, depending on the country in which you are … you directly subscribe a package from mobile operators from the iPhone.

In France, Orange is the first to adopt this format, but mobile operators are deliberately slowing the deployment of this new mode of consumption. Why ? This implies the entry of manufacturers into the subscription phase, with all the risks of dependence and change in the balance of relationships that this entails between consumers and mobile operators.
Of course, if Google Fi is available in Europe … it's a safe bet that mobile operators will also drag their feet to sign the roaming agreements necessary for Google. As a reminder, neither Google nor Apple own own mobile network in Europe.
