How to back up and restore your data on Android?

Today, the smartphone contains a good part of your life, your bank account, your photos or your messages. If you change your phone regularly, or if you lose your mobile, it can be interesting to find all this valuable data, whether your SMS, your emails or your holiday movies. Here's how to backup your data just on Android.

Today, there are different ways to save your data on Android: either through third-party apps available on the Google Play Store (not just through Google Photos), or thanks to Android itself that restores its apps previously installed on a mobile or other Android device. Let's start with a brief explanation of the system put in place by Google.
Android and data recovery
Since Android 5.0 Lollipop, when you turn on your phone for the first time, the system will ask you to sign in to your Google Account. Once this operation is completed, the mobile will ask you from which device previously connected to the same account you want to perform data recovery. You will then be asked to select the applications to synchronize. Second interesting point, some applications also save data, a choice made by the developer when designing its application.

To activate the automatic data backup function, simply go to your mobile settings, then search for "backup" and activate "Back up my data" – the labels may differ depending on the smartphone. On Huawei terminals, there is for example a category "Backup and Restore" to manage the backup of its data by Google and Huawei accounts.

Once enabled, you will be offered to restore your previously installed apps to your new mobile device each time you sign in to your Google Account.
Third-party applications
Back up applications
On Android, there are multiple applications to back up your data. Features also change if your device is rooted or not. We have selected two applications: Helium (formerly Carbon) and Titanium Backup.
Helium is developed by the Clockworkmod team. The application is available in two versions: one free, and the other pay (3.71 euros) which removes the ads and adds the backup in the cloud. It allows you to back up your applications and their data. Unfortunately, Helium can not save photos, contacts and builders' apps.

During the first launch of the application, it is also necessary to have a computer on hand and install software available on the developer's site. But it's one of the best apps available on the Play Store to back up your apps on Android.

Save contacts, calendars and favorites
If you do not use your Google Account to automatically sync data such as phone contacts, calendars, browser favorites, or call history, an app is needed to back up locally or in the cloud.

This is the goal of Super Backup which is packed with features. The application allows you to create backups for each type of data, send them to cloud storage and restore them, but it also offers to transfer data directly from one device to another.

Software from Huawei, Samsung, etc.
Manufacturers also offer tools to back up your data, often by synchronizing the smartphone with a computer. Some also offer to transfer data between two phones. Convenient when you have just purchased a new phone, or for people switching from iOS to Android. These solutions, especially when they use a PC, are however in decline, the manufacturers preferring to offer a service in the cloud, or leave the hand to Google.

As you can see, backing up data on Android can be done in a variety of ways, using third-party applications or directly through the solutions that Google and its partners put in place. We obviously could not talk about all the solutions. Feel free to suggest the solutions or applications you use to make this important task faster and less time-consuming.
