Premium design and mastered
Design is perhaps the point on which the three smartphones differentiate the most. With the P20 Pro, Huawei has adopted the notch and has completely revised the design of its high-end smartphones. The Mate 20 Pro differed with its 3D facial recognition creating a wide notch, and its square camera module centered at the back.

The P30 Pro inherits its two predecessors, we find the rounded screen, but the photo module is placed vertically in a corner of the back. Maxime also notes in the test of the P30 Pro, proximities in hand with the Mate 20 Pro. The notch has been reduced to the maximum, to take the form of a drop of water. Apart from the aspect, we will criticize especially the P30 Pro volume, it is large and heavy.

Overall, the design of the smartphone is now completely mastered by Huawei, the finishes of the smartphone are sublime. On this point, the three smartphones finally hold a handkerchief.
The same performance as the Mate 20 Pro
Unlike its competitors, Huawei renews its processors at the end of the year with the Mate range. Thus the Mate 20 Pro was the first to integrate the Kirin 980 found in the P30 Pro. Both smartphones have very similar performance, with a small advantage to the P30 Pro that includes 8 GB LPDDR4X RAM (against 6 GB for the Mate 20 Pro).

The performance gap with the P20 Pro launched a year ago is more sensitive, even if the Kirin 970 was already quite powerful. Especially the use of 7nm engraving makes the difference, it allows the P30 Pro less heat and save energy, which is reflected on the autonomy of the device and longevity of performance In any case, we are dealing with a smartphone that will be fluid in all circumstances, and will be compatible with Fortnite.
A portrait mode that makes all the difference
It is in the photo that Huawei put to differentiate the P30 Pro from its predecessors. The smartphone incorporates 3 cameras, the first with a 40 megapixel sensor with a f / 1.6 lens, a second equipped with a 20 megapixel ultra-wide angle f / 2.4 sensor and a new telephoto camera of 8 megapixels f / 3,4. Added to this is a TOF sensor that allows you to accurately evaluate the depth of the scene.
With all this, the P30 Pro probably incorporates the best portrait mode on the market, with a successful clipping and beautiful effects of blur in the background, and depth.

It is with this mode that the P30 Pro shines particularly. For the rest, the smartphone is doing honorably under all circumstances, as did before the P20 Pro and Mate 20 Pro.

Not surprisingly, by day the three smartphones offer very good photo performance. This is normal for high-end smartphones for several years, and it is not on this aspect that we can differentiate them.
       P30 Pro Mate Pro 20 P20 Pro
On these photos taken at night, we can see that the three devices are doing honorably. The street photo taken by the P30 Pro is better than the other two, but it also comes from lighting conditions better than the photos of the park.
The same battery as the Mate 20 Pro
Although the P30 Pro is significantly more compact than the Mate 20 Pro, the smartphone has a battery of the same volume: 4200 mAh. This allows the smartphone to get an excellent score on our self-test, and easily keep both days in use. It also inherits the SuperCharge 2.0 Mate 20 Pro 40W, which can recover 71% in 30 minutes.
It's on this point where the difference is with the P20 Pro. Its battery of 4000 mAh is a little less impressive, although it already allows to hold a busy day. The smartphone recharges a little more slowly, and earns "only" 45% in 30 minutes.
Availability and prices
The Huawei P30 Pro is launched at 999 euros in France for the version with 128 GB of storage. At the exit, this places the smartphone to almost 300 euros more than the Mate 20 Pro, which has seen its price melt since its release.
The Huawei P20 Pro has also seen its price fall below 500 euros.

Conclusion
As you can see, the Huawei P30 Pro takes most of the recipe that made the success of the Mate 20 Pro, refining some points like the camera. It is the latter which benefits from the most improvements, in particular thanks to the addition of the TOF sensor which makes it possible to make beautiful photos in portrait mode. The rest, performance, autonomy or the design finishes are too close to really differentiate between devices.
If you have a P20 Pro or a Mate 20 Pro, it does not seem worth investing in the new generation of Huawei. If you have an older smartphone from Huawei, the gap will this time be enough to ask the question.
If you are in this case, or wondering what to choose between the Mate 20 Pro and the P30 Pro, ask yourself if the difference in photo justifies the difference of 300 euros. To learn more, feel free to read the full test of Huawei P30 Pro on FrAndroid.
