Here is my selection of the 4 best baby scales from more than fifteen models available on the market, so that you too can reassure you and monitor the potential problems of your bout'chou.
The baby scale from Chicco is by far my favorite: a scale design, easy to use and accurate for a reasonable price!
You will also find at the end of this article a shopping guide that will allow you, I hope, to make the best choice for your family.
The best cheap baby scales
For very affordable prices of less than 50 euros, here are two baby scales that will particularly appeal to small budgets.
Boston Tech BA-104: the best cheap
Tape measure included and attached to the scale
No storage measures
Not always very stable
For a similar investment, here is a second scale. Like the Todeco, this scale is also specially designed to weigh baby during its first years (maximum weight of 20 kilos) and very easy and accurate (accuracy of 5 g).
With its tare function and digital LCD display that offers a large digit size of 23 mm, you have no problem to have an accurate weight and easy to read, whether in kilos, books or other unit according to your preferences .
In order to accurately measure, even when baby moves, the scale has been designed with a special function called "Hold". The scale will try to take a measurement, but it does not show a real weight on the screen until the baby stops moving. So very practical to measure our little maggots!
A tape measure is once again included but this time integrated directly into the scale, which greatly facilitates the measurement compared to the Todeco model.
Unfortunately, here no data storage function, only the last measurement is saved and appears when you turn on the scale. You will need to record the measures yourself to control the growth of your child.
Its automatic shutdown function after 20 seconds of inactivity guarantees a long battery life (3 x AAA included).
This platform is supported with non-skid rubber safety feet, allowing you to weigh baby on many surfaces, even a kitchen table or whatever. It does not remain, however, apparently very stable.
It is also easy to carry (dimensions of 60 x 37 x 8 cm and 1.8 kilograms) and can therefore follow you in any room of the house or even on holidays without worries.
The surface to be weighed is concave, so you can place the baby on the surface safely.
Level look I find it much less pretty, with touches of yellow that I do not particularly like. She also has no music function to calm baby but this is obviously not essential.
It remains, however, in my opinion, easier and better than the Todeco, especially because of the presence of a hold function.
Todeco: the cute
Measure by tape measure not simple or very precise
The first scale of this selection is a small scale that allows you to easily weigh your toddler whether at home or on vacation.
Indeed, its size and weight make it an accessory that can easily be transported (1.5 kg, 65.4 x 33.2 x 11.6 cm), especially that it runs on batteries (4 x AA).
With its maximum load of 20 kg, it can weigh your child during his first years, what can always follow its evolution. Besides, the included data storage feature allows you to record your baby's growth.
A small measuring tape provided with the scale, even allows to measure baby if necessary. A very practical kit for parents or even professionals!
Be careful though, measuring a baby with a tape measure can be much more athletic than you think. I'm not sure this is the simplest or most accurate method …
With the backlight of the screen, you will have no trouble reading the result and the tare and change of unit option make a precise balance and easy to use. You can even use the music feature to catch your baby's attention and make it even more enjoyable.
In order to preserve the batteries, the scale is automatically deactivated after 60 seconds of inactivity, but you can always deactivate it manually after 3 seconds.
Very easy to use, this baby scale is also easy to clean with a damp cloth or sponge. And with its beautiful bear shape, this baby scale will please your little one for sure!
A basic and cheap baby scale, but one that is practical, precise and easy to use, in addition to being pretty. What satisfy many parents and professionals.
The best mid-range baby scales
For not much more expensive, here is a mid-range baby scale that stood out.
Chicco: the best mid-range
No storage measures
The only balance of the mid-range of this selection, the scale of the famous Chicco brand stands out very quickly by its design. Indeed, if its surface is concave like the previous scales, it is much prettier and its ergonomic ultra flat design (Dimensions (lxlxh): 61 x 34.5 x 6.4 cm) and lightweight (1.5 kilos ) allow you to easily leave it prominently in the nursery without denoting it.
With its dimensions and 2 AA 15 V alkaline batteries (supplied), this scale is also easily transportable and is therefore perfect for holidays.
Like the previous ones, it accepts a maximum weight of 20 kilos, which allows you to weigh your child during his first years without worries. Its accuracy is however a little less good since it is only 10 g, that said it is not a problem, except perhaps during the very first days of baby where one is really interested in the less fluctuation.
Like the baby scale Boston, it also has a tare function, but also a system of automatic stabilization of the weighing (anti-vibration) to be able to weigh the child even when it moves. No need, however, to select this function as on the previous model!
Its LCD screen is easily readable and reminds you of the last weighing on ignition. Here again, no storage measures over the long term unfortunately.
A balance that seems confident and is pretty and practical. It is definitely my sister stroke in this selection and proposed for a price still quite affordable.
The best value for money in my opinion, especially with the automatic stabilization that will certainly simplify the task of many parents!
The best high-end baby scales
For larger budgets, here's a high-end baby scale that stands out.
Terraillon: the best upscale
Transport case included
No storage measures
Famous scale brand of all kinds, Terraillon offers here its baby scale version, at a price still quite high and which is clearly a small investment.
For this price, this scale has an ideal basket for use with newborns but can be removed for weighing larger children (up to 20 kg).
With its precision of 5 grams, and a tare function, this scale is very accurate and allows a measure of quality, even when the child moves thanks to the lock function of the measure that allows the stabilization of the weight even when baby is agitated. A function always welcome, especially with the little ones!
The curved plastic carrycot for baby comfort and safety gives way to a durable, easy-to-clean glass tray when baby grows up and can stand up while weighing. A scalable scale that is well thought out and always easy to read thanks to its large backlit LCD display (2.1 cm large format digits).
This scale also has perfect stability thanks to four wide feet, which is not surprising from a brand also known in the field.
This scale is, like the previous ones, easily transportable thanks to its light weight (less than 2 kg), its rather small size ((WxLxH): 50 x 30.5 x 6 cm) and its operation by batteries (3x AA , not included). It even comes with a protective cover and transport that facilitates travel!
A balance rather expensive so that is good quality for sure. Ideal for professionals. Level design, it is, in my opinion, very basic, but pretty. However nothing to do with the design of the previous balance!
The products of my selection on offer at the moment
If you are starting to buy a baby scale, it is because you want to follow the weight evolution of your child, in a precise and easy way. Faced with the choice available on the market it is easy to be lost.
Here are the criteria to consider before buying to choose the one that will be perfect for you.
The weight limit
First of all, it is necessary to choose a model adapted to your child and especially to its weight in order to obtain an accurate measurement. Most baby scales have a weight limit of 20 kilos, which makes it easy to weigh your child during his or her first years.
When your little one reaches the limit of 20 kilos, he is usually perfectly able to stand on an adult scale. Not sure therefore that it is very profitable to spend more to have a scale that allows to weigh more than 20 kilos.
In addition to the weight limit, you must also pay attention to the accuracy of the scale. Many offer a precision of 5 or 10 grams which, in my opinion, is ample enough for normal use, just to regularly monitor your child's weight gain.
If, on the contrary, you want a balance for a very frequent measurement to detect the slightest fluctuations in weight, you will probably invest in an even more precise model (and therefore more expensive).
In order to easily weigh your child, it is best to choose a scale model with a large LCD display and a large display so you can easily read the measurement. A backlit display is also an advantage since it will allow you to weigh even in a rather dark place, ideal when baby sleeps.
Also check that the unit of measurement is the one you are used to. Most scales also offer the possibility of changing the unit of measurement very easily if necessary.
In order to protect the balance and baby by putting a small blanket under the baby, it is interesting to have a balance with a tare function. This will also allow you to weigh baby with his diaper and / or clothes before removing him for example while ensuring a precise measurement.
Hold / automatic stabilization function
Another particularly interesting feature with children is the hold function, which allows you to take the measure only once the weight stabilized, that is to say when the child does not move.
On baby scales a little more sophisticated, an automatic stabilization function often exists. This will give you a precise measurement at any time, even if your child is fidgeting. A significant advantage!
To make it easier for your baby to fall off the weighing platform, the baby scales are generally made of a concave platform and some (but very few) even have a safety belt. security, just in case.
If the seat belt is not essential, a curvature of the weighing platform is a necessity but that does not allow to avoid the constant monitoring of the child.
A comfortable platform for your child will make him even more appreciate this moment not always pleasant and you can always cover the surface of a small blanket if necessary (thanks to the function Tare, this will pose no problem for the measurement).
Scalable scales have a platform that can be removed and gives way to a flat surface, ideal for standing and similar to a scale for adults. If conversion is welcome, it does not seem necessary to invest more for this option.
If your child is tall enough to stand up and technically use the flat platform then he can certainly use an adult scale.
As any device that is used with baby, especially since your little one is often naked on it, the scale must have a surface that cleans easily, ideally with a sponge.
So prefer plastic surfaces, even add a small lange on it.
If a scale that is battery-powered will be more easily transportable and positionable anywhere in the house, it will be necessary in return to ensure the charging of batteries and provide spare batteries. Most models on the market also have an automatic shutdown function after a few seconds of inactivity, which greatly helps not to empty the batteries too quickly.
On the contrary, a power supply is much more economical, but does not allow as much freedom as one can imagine. The ideal is therefore a baby scale that has both modes of feeding but if you have to choose I advise to favor the batteries.
In general, the baby scale is not used very often and it is therefore necessary to be able to easily store it when not in use, unless you really have plenty of room to leave it always out. It is therefore necessary to choose a model that does not take up too much space.
Most of the time, the baby scales are not very high and can therefore slip under a changing table or on a shelf. Similarly, a scale not too big and light will be easily transportable from one room to another of the house and can also accompany you on vacation if necessary, especially if it works with batteries.
Some even come with a small practical carrying bag.
In addition to all the above criteria, some scales have other features that may also be of interest to you.
Memory of measurements
While most baby scales display the weight of the previous measurement at startup, some have the advantage of having a storage of measurements via mobile phone or directly on the scale, which allows you to easily see how your weight is changing. child.
Practice so when you really want to see the evolution, but do not want to bother to note everything. Not essential in my opinion, this function can also cost you quite a lot.
The musical function
Another feature that may seem useful is a music key that allows baby to calm down during weighing with pre-recorded music. Others can even connect directly to your phone or computer to select baby's favorite music.
Again not at all essential in my opinion, this option will also cost you often quite expensive, especially if you want to connect the scale to your phone.
The tape measure
Finally, some scales are sold with a measuring tape, attached or not to the scale, so that you can measure your little besides weighing it. If the size is much less a criterion of anxiety of the parents and especially much less fluctuating than the weight of baby, it is also much more difficult to measure correctly.
So, in my opinion, this is a completely useless accessory that you will have often already at home. Measure almost impossible to take alone with a child who moves, let professionals.
In conclusion, what baby scale to choose?
In my opinion, you have to choose a precise, easy-to-use baby scale and if possible with an automatic stabilizing function, as is the case, in particular, with the Boston Tech BA-104 or the Terraillon.
No need to invest so much, an equivalent of the mid-range model Chicco presented here being perfectly adapted.
Forget the non-essential functions that can be expensive unless you really have the budget or you have a child who asks to be weighed extremely regularly for health reasons.
Tanita: This scale is certainly of quality and endowed with interesting functions, but it is certainly much too expensive for many of us.
