Even if this purchase is for many of us a basic purchase for which we attach little importance (we do not ask the moon, we just want a precise balance), it is easy to be quickly drowned under the choices available. Here is my selection of the 4 best electronic scales (let's face it, the analogue scales are outdated) currently available on the market.
The Etekcity 9380 scale is my favorite and the best value for me if you're looking for a basic scale. No need to spend more in this case. For those looking for a scale with more measurements, then the Nokia Body + looks great and at an affordable price.
A little shopping guide at the end of this article will help you make the right choice for your needs.
The best cheap bathroom scales
For less than 30 euros, here are two scales that will delight small budgets.
Etekcity 9380: the best cheap price
Stop and auto zero
For a very small price of just 22 euros, Etekcity offers an electronic scale. With its backlit LCD screen, you will be able to easily read the verdict on the scale, even in the dim light.
The automatic shutdown makes it possible not to ruin itself in batteries (2 AAA batteries necessary but provided). The scale also tells you when the time has come to change them.
It will be easy for you to put the scale in kilos or pounds / stones mode according to your preferences thanks to the small button below the scale. This scale is capable of weighing up to 180 kg (400 lb / 28 st) with an accuracy of 100 grams thanks to its 4 sensors, which is more than enough.
With "Step-On" technology, this scale provides you with a quick measurement as soon as you step on it. You can immediately read your weight, especially since it is not necessary to tare, thanks to the automatic zero.
Ultra thin, but very resistant with its tempered glass of 6mm, this scale is available in a nice elegant black color that will not stain in your bathroom. Its large platform of 30 x 30 cm is ideal for easy use.
The non-slip padding on the underside of the scale keeps the balance stable during measurement and provides accurate results.
A balance certainly basic, but who does his job very well and who is in addition to everything very pretty. If you do not look more in a scale then it is perfect, especially with its very small price.
Be careful though, it will not fit if you are over 180kg, or are not far from that weight. This scale is in my opinion the best quality / price ratio of this selection.
Etekcity 9388H: the design
Stop and auto zero
For a slightly higher price, but still under the 30 euros mark, the brand Etekcity offers yet again an electronic scale, but this time visually very different from the previous one, with its even more modern design including a stainless steel tray.
This gives the scale longer durability and easier maintenance, while being a decorative object for your bathroom.
However, this scale has many features similar to the previous scale, such as the large, white backlit LCD display (74 x 40 mm) that quickly displays measurements with large visible digits for easy reading.
This scale also works with two supplied AAA batteries and the Auto-off feature after 15 seconds of inactivity can extend the battery life significantly, saving you from having to change batteries after a few uses (such as this is the case with some scales).
With its easy-to-reach kg / lb conversion button and generous 30 x 30 cm platform, this scale is just as convenient to use as the first one, with instant readout thanks to the auto calibration function.
Unfortunately, just like the previous scale, the capacity of 180 kg maximum (with a high accuracy of 100g) can cause concern for some people.
Its indicators of battery and overload will allow you to quickly find out where the problem comes from during a measurement. With equal features, I think the first scale is just as good.
The best midrange scales
If your budget is a little wider, but does not exceed 100 euros, here is a balance that should please you.
Nokia Body +: the best mid-range
Connected (simple smartphone app)
Several possible user profiles
For a much higher price of nearly 80 euros, here is the first connected scale of this selection. For the price, this device provides an accurate picture of your body.
Various measures are thus proposed by this connected scale: weight, body mass index, muscle mass, bone mass, your percentage of fat, water, etc. All weighings are recorded automatically in the Health Mate application via Wi-Fi connection. -Fi or Bluetooth, as desired.
You can consult your weight curve at any time of the day so you can identify the events that make it vary and see your evolution over time. Do not panic though if you do not have a network because it is able to store up to 116 measurements in memory, which makes it easy to go on vacation with it.
The Health Mate app is free and provides guidance and encouragement for you to achieve and refine your goals.
Health Mate is a smartphone application that integrates more than 100 partner applications. For example, it takes into account the calorie count via LoseIt! and the calories burned by your morning jog in Runtastic and then centralize this information to allow you to surpass yourself.
The Health Mate app is clear and readable and the app handles all the data collected by the Body + balance very well. It is worth remembering that this app can be associated with the application MyFitnessPal which allows to take into account the calories absorbed at each meal. Really great for people who want to lose weight or simply take care of their body!
Ideal for the whole family, this scale is able to recognize up to 8 different users. It's possible to follow the evolution of your whole family, including baby with baby and pregnancy modes designed to accompany new mothers and pregnant women.
If two people weighing more or less the same weight use this scale, it offers a direct identification when weighing by simply displaying the initials of both people, one on the left and one on the right. It is therefore sufficient to weigh on the side of the initials that concern you so that the recognition is carried out. Nothing simpler then!
Its blue backlit LCD screen allows everyone to easily read measurements even with little light in the room.
The design of this connected scale is extremely sober and will fit seamlessly into any room with its beautiful black tray. Other tray colors exist at variable prices and you will find your happiness for sure.
The autonomy of this machine running on 4 alkaline batteries is 18 months according to Nokia, which leaves you plenty of time to worry about finding spare batteries.
It is of course preferable to use a balance on flat ground for precise measurements but if you ever plan to use it on the carpet, no problem: four small feet designed specifically to stabilize the device on this type of soil are supplied with the connected scale.
A balance certainly expensive, but still seems much more powerful than the previous ones. If you are interested in these measures in addition to your weight, then it is perfect and its price is, in my opinion, justified.
The best high-end scales
For much larger budgets, here is a scale that stands out!
Fitbit Aria 2: the best high-end
Connected (simple smartphone app)
Several possible user profiles
No measure of percentage of water
For even more expensive, the balance Fitbit Aria 2 is, at nearly 120 euros, the high end of this selection. Like the previous scale, she is also connected.
It allows you to record your weight, body fat percentage, BMI (Body Mass Index) and lean body mass. It therefore offers fewer parameters to measure than the previous balance. For the price, it's a shame …
You'll be able to check your trends and track your progress with easy-to-read charts and graphs from the Fitbit dashboard. The metrics automatically sync with computers and more than 200 of the major iOS, Android, and Windows devices over your home Wi-Fi network and are visible through the Fitbit app.
Of course, it is compatible with Fitbit watches and bracelets to help you better understand the impact of your activity on your weight.
Just like the previous balance, it recognizes up to 8 users while preserving the confidentiality of the results of each, which allows a whole family to use it without worries. Its backlit LCD screen allows everyone to read the measurements easily.
It also works with batteries (3 AAA batteries included). It is ready to use.
Designed with a polished glass surface, this scale fits perfectly in any interior.Water resistant, it does not fear the proximity of the bath or shower.
Like most previous scales, it has a maximum weight of 180 kg, which will suit many, but you will choose another if you find yourself close to this weight, unfortunately. Too bad it does not go a little higher.
I find that, being the high price, this scale is quite disappointing if you compare it with the previous connected scale that has more measures, for about 50 euros less. Not sure therefore that the price is justified!
The products of my selection on offer for the moment
Whether it's a basic scale or a connected scale, most households own a scale at any given time. In order to make the right choice according to your needs, here is a small reminder of the criteria to take into account to choose from the multitude available on the market.
Let's be honest, a balance is a balance, the main criterion of choice when looking for a basic scale is the look of it. Fashion today is transparent scales, or on the contrary with a tray design gray or black, modern, and mat.
Finish the white balance of our parents!
The visualization of the weight is also an important criterion of choice, especially if you have problems of sight and need a screen big enough. A backlight is also an asset since it allows a better visualization and especially allows to use the scale in the dim light.
A scale is, I think, a favorite purchase, once the price range selected.
When it comes to a scale, the accuracy of the balance is usually good enough for its primary use. There is no need for a scale that weighs nearly a gram in general.
This criterion is therefore rarely taken into account when choosing the balance, since they are mostly equivalent in this area (usually with an accuracy of 100 g).
Where the difference between scale is really felt (besides the look), is the additional features, which will be more or less interesting, depending on your needs.
It is thus possible to find a scale that, in addition to the conventional scale, allows you to more or less accurately determine your body composition such as your body fat and your percentage of water and muscle mass.
The impedance meter
A scale incorporating an impedance meter may interest you if you are looking to lose or gain weight, or to sculpt your body. Thanks to the sensors integrated in the tray, a light electrical current flows through the body of the user.
Do not panic, it is imperceptible! Depending on the resistance that this current encounters, the device evaluates the fat content and also, depending on the model, the muscle mass, the volume of water and the bone mass.
The results obtained are also based on statistical data as a function of age, size, sex and level of physical activity previously indicated. Keep in mind that they are approximate.
These scales, by their much higher technology, are in general and logically much more expensive than conventional scales. They usually keep in mind the weight to compare it from one time to the next and can serve multiple users at the same time.
The case of connected scales
The most hi-tech scales are, they, connected to your tablet or smartphone via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi and the use of an application, in order to record your weight (and other measured parameters) and follow its evolution in a nothing time.
This is particularly interesting for people who weigh heavily, especially in a diet. This will allow you to have an overview of your progress in no time.
The most technophiles will be able to decorate the system of a connected bracelet of the same brand as their scale to measure their physical activity and thus determine their energy needs according to a goal of form.
Attention, before buying a connected scale, it is necessary to pay attention to several details. I invite you to take a look at the article on connected scales if you decide to move towards this type of scale!
