The CES 2019 was an opportunity for manufacturers to present their first products compatible with Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) which promises a speed of up to 6 Gb / s.
The role of the Las Vegas CES is to launch the trends for the year for the new technology sector. It plays this role of its importance, but also of its placement from the first days of the year. The number of announcements around Wi-Fi 6 at CES 2019 is a perfect example.
What is Wi-Fi 6? Interest and flow of 802.11ax
As we discuss in our Wi-Fi story, Wi-Fi 6 refers to the next generation of local wireless networks, also known as 802.11ax. This new standard simultaneously uses the two frequencies of previous generations: 2.4 and 5 GHz, where the 802.11ac was limited to 5 GHz. The creators of Wi-Fi 6 promise inter alia better management of dense networks, increased speeds, with some devices up to 6 Gb / s, and especially reduced consumption for mobile devices.
The expected strengths of Wi-Fi 6
Reduced consumption for mobile devices
Better management of a large number of connected devices (airports, train station, shopping centers, stadiums, etc.)
Rate of 1.2 Gb / s per stream (compared to 866 Mb / s for Wi-Fi 5)
Backward compatible with Wi-Fi 802.11 a / b / g / n / ac (Wi-Fi 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5)
CES 2019 announcements
Asus presents at CES a new Wi-Fi router of its professional range with a rather sober design. The RT-AX58U is compatible Wi-Fi 6 (draft 3.0) on 2 x 2 antennas (two in transmission, two in reception) for a rate of up to 2.4 Gb / s for 5 GHz, and 574 Mb / s for the 2.4 GHz that penetrates better through the walls. The device incorporates an Intel Wi-Fi WAV654 chip with an Intel AnyWAN GRX350 processor. The wired is also in the game with 4 Gigabit Ethernet ports for the local network, and a Wan Gigabit Ethernet port to connect the device to the Internet.
The brand promises an exit during the year at an affordable price, without more precision.
TP-Link Archer AX11000, AX6000, AX1800 and RE705X
Well known to network enthusiasts, the brand TP-Link presented at CES 2019 a complete family of products compatible with Wi-Fi 6. The champion announcements is the TP-Link Deco X10 that joins the solutions of Wi-Fi Mesh brand . This small device promises speeds up to 1.95 Gb / s and fits well in a mesh network. It is expected to come out in the third quarter of 2019.
Archer AX11000 and Archer AX6000 routers are primarily developed with the players in mind, which explains their design a little more flashy. As the name suggests, the Archer AX11000 promises a cumulative throughput of up to 11 Gb / s (4.8 Gb / s for the 5 GHz band dedicated to players, 4.8 Gb / s for a second band 5 GHz, and 1.1 Gb / s for the 2.4 GHz band). For its part the Archer AX6000 offers only two simultaneous bands, 4.8 Gb / s in the 5 GHz band and 1.1 Gb / s in the 2.4 GHz band. These two routers will be available as early as March 2019.

In the third quarter, TP-Link will also market the Archer AX1800 router, which will be marketed at a more accessible rate, without any further precision, and the RE705X Wi-Fi Repeater, which will extend an already existing Wi-Fi 6 network.
Netgear Orbi RBK50
Netgear does not present new routers at CES 2019. The brand has already launched them in 2018 with its Nighthawk AX8 and AX12 based on Wi-Fi 802.11ax draft 2.0. On the other hand, the manufacturer unveiled a new element of its Wi-Fi Mesh Orbi family of devices. We had already tested the RBK20 in 2018 which was limited to Wi-Fi 5.
The new model, RBK152, will be compatible Wi-Fi 6 and will be available in the second half of 2019. The case will be compatible with existing Orbi networks, and will achieve speeds of over 1 Gb / s with the support of 12 simultaneous streams. The signal will be focused on 3 frequency bands.
Intel Ice Lake
Intel does not directly manufacture devices that will be sold to the general public. However, the firm presented at CES 2019 a new generation of processor with the Ice Lake architecture whose first equipped machines are to be marketed before the end of the year. Computers that are equipped with Ice Lake will have Wi-Fi access 6.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 855
Qualcomm is becoming more and more a competitor of Intel in all sectors. At CES, the firm was mainly demonstrating routers integrating its solutions, such as Netgear Orbi compatible Wi-Fi 6. It must however be remembered that the brand has already presented the Snapdragon 855 in December. This high-end chip will be integrated with most high-end smartphones that will be released in 2019 and is compatible with Wi-Fi 6.
