Between low-end models and excessively expensive models, it is clear that there are only two electric scooters that really stand out for their quality / price ratio. This is the Xiaomi M365 released in 2016 that we were able to test and the 2018 Xiaomi Ninebot Segway S2. Two rather similar models that we put here in confrontation, despite their notable differences in price. You will find the M365 at a high price of 399 euros and the Ninebot Segway ES2 at 599 euros. Which is the most comfortable? The most powerful ? Has the most autonomy? Answer in this versus.

Design: Scooters that look alike
At first glance, there is not much that distinguishes these two scooters. They resemble each other like two drops of water in their black / gray colors and have almost the same dimensions: 108 x 43 x 114 cm for the M365 against 102 x 43 x 113 cm for the Segway ES2. In addition, both scooters are made of aluminum alloy. So you have to look at them a little more closely to see the differences.
On the M365, we can see that the brake wires are visible on the handlebars. A problem at the same time aesthetic, but also security that has bypassed his opponent by hiding all this on the handlebars. The stem also hosts the battery, while it is under the tray for the M365, which explains the differences in size. Note that the bells are different and that the ties to fold the scooters are not in the same place. The Segway also has a space reserved for its second battery, an LCD screen and a small hook to keep your stuff. She is therefore a bit more complete.

In the long run, it will be necessary to pay attention to the M365 which most rubber caches could be trunk. But in either case, the M365 and the Ninebot Segway ES2 are modern scooters and perfectly in tune with the times. Note that it will be necessary to assemble them during your purchase, but that the handling is relatively simple.
We still prefer the M365 to the Ninebot Segway ES2 in terms of design, because it seems finer in our eyes. But this is primarily a matter of taste.
Comfort and practicality: a good point for inflatable tires
As stated above, the dimensions are almost identical and it is the same for the weight that is around 12.5 kg for both scooters. You will have a little trouble taking them with you on public transport. For the driving phases, we have a deck with a non slip mat on both sides, LEDs and headlights to be clearly visible, a crutch and a bell for the M365.
The M365 comes with inflatable tires while the Segway ES2 has full wheels. The feeling of comfort is more present on the first scooter, but its wheels are subject to the puncture. In addition, if the pressure is too low, you risk losing autonomy. The weight distribution is the other big point of differentiation of these two scooters. As stated above, the battery is in the deck for the M365 and the stem for the Ninebot Segway ES2. This changes the apprehension of the road.

It feels like you're going faster with the solid wheels of the ES2 and the comfort has been improved since the old model thanks to the new rear shock absorbers. However, the wheels will tend to lose grip on special surfaces like sand. Regarding the water, it's the same fight for the two scooters: avoid rolling over on pain of slipping and especially to use it in rainy weather, because they are not waterproof.
Finally, both devices are equipped with an electric and mechanical brake, not to mention the mudguard for emergency braking. The M365 is easier to understand than its competitor, although the feeling seems better with the Ninebot Segway ES2 because of the weight distributed in the handlebars.
Power and speed
French legislation requires vehicles that can go more than 25 km / h to be registered. Luckily, this does not apply to the M365 or the Segway ES2. They respectively carry a motor with a nominal power of 250 W / 500 W max and 300 W / 700 W max. A gap that is felt especially at startup.
But does it really serve? No doubt it is when you have to take slopes, for the less lightweight users. And once again, your vehicle is limited to 25 km / h.
The Segway ES2 has the advantage of being able to display the speed at which the user rolls. Also, it can switch in three modes: sport, standard or limited. The first allows the user to drive his scooter fully, when the second is less biting at startup. The last one corresponds to the energy saving mode of the M365 and limits the speed to about 15 km / h. What to save the battery in both cases.

The Segway ES2 is doing better on this ground compared to the M365.
There are many variables to consider regarding the autonomy of these scooters, starting with the weight of the user. Depending on this, the engine will need more or less energy to move forward, and this will be felt particularly in climbs.
Then it turns out that the M365 has a bigger battery than the Segway ES2 (280 Wh versus 187 Wh). The first scooter is a little better overall and can travel a little more than 25 km, when the other is limited to a few miles. It is however possible to add an external battery to the Segway ES2 to increase the range up to 45 km depending on the manufacturer. This number will probably have to be reduced.

It will take about 5 hours to fully charge the M365 and only 3 hours for the Segway ES2. A difference that is important if you are pressed for time. Be aware that both models can recover energy through their kinetic brake, but the recovery is quite minimal.
On this point, and if we skip this external battery story, the M365 is doing the best.
We had raised it in the design part: the Segway ES2 has the advantage of having a small LCD screen which displays information on the driving speed, the remaining range as well as the activated mode. None of this on the M365, or almost. There are four small lights showing the remaining autonomy. It's a bit light.
For more information or options, it will take a ride on the mobile application Ninebot available on iOS and Android. On the M365, you will have the opportunity to know more precisely your remaining battery rate, adjust the kinetic brake force (low, medium, strong) and activate a lock system. The latter blocks with the brakes the wheels of your scooter, roughly.

Conclusion: which is the best electric scooter?
The two scooters are again quite similar from a design point of view. It is clear that the Segway ES2 has more bite and more sense of detail than the M365. But the latter has the advantage of being more affordable and offers better road comfort, despite its perhaps too great simplicity. And if it is the price that has to decide, it is to the Xiaomi M365 that it is necessary to turn.
